FUN FACTS ABOUT TEXAS
Texas, home of cowboys, tumbleweed, the methodical nodding pumpjacks of the Texas oil fields and not much else. Is this how you think of Texas? As Roy Rogers sang “hold on partner, good things are coming your way.”
Six countries have ruled over Texas. Spain (1519-1685; 1690-1821), France (1685-1690), Mexico (1821-1836), the Republic of Texas (1836-1845), the Confederate States of America (1861-1865) and the Unites States of America (1845-1861; 1865-present). [1] This coined the phrase the “Six Flags of Texas”.
Texas ranks second in the USA for biodiversity [2], land size and population [3]. With a land area of 261,231 square miles Texas is larger than any European country. Situated in the central position of the USA’s southern border, the vast land area overlaps a number of major ecosystems. It includes the Southern desserts, great plains, the rainy Gulf Coast and the Mexican subtropics of the Rio Grande. The limestone region of Edwards Plateau contains some of the rarest species in the USA.
If you’re a nature loving family head on down to Padre Island, the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world. The Padre Island National Seashore is a vast protected area with white sandy beaches, prairies and wind tidal flats. It’s a bird watchers paradise with over 380 bird species. Padre Island is also home to the protected breeding grounds of the rare Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, where the public can go to view hatchling releases [4]. Go beachcombing, fishing, camping or play in the 3 feet deep Laguna Madre.
Whether you yearn for big city lights or wide-open spaces, you’ll be thrilled to visit Texas. Big Bend National Park and Palo Duro Canyon State Park have so much to offer campers, hikers and those just seeking vast open skies to travel under.
Texas is home to the Space Station Houston, the official visitor center of NASA Johnson Space Centre. There’s the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, with over 500 original artefacts spanning 13,000 years [5]. Visit the vast Texas State Fair offering 277 acres of fall fun or the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden.
A unique day out is the San Antonio River Walk, a below street level 15-mile urban waterway, the largest urban ecosystem in the USA. Just steps away from the Alamo, the river walk allows you to stop at local cafes and restaurants as you amble along exploring the city. Too tired to walk? No problem, just climb aboard a barge for a guided river tour.
Texas also has a little more than its fair share of quirks too. There’s the small town of Decatur which in 2014 rescheduled Halloween because it clashed with the high school’s Friday night football game. The 201 residents of the small town of Clark, which in 2005 renamed their town Dish when the satellite television company Dish Network offered them free cable if they did. It’s legal to shoot Big Foot in Texas and apparently atheists can’t hold public office. From the Texas Monthly “Pressley pointed to a section of the Texas Constitution’s Bill of Rights that says there are no religious qualifications for holding public office, provided that the official “acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being.” [6]
