FUN FACTS ABOUT NEVADA
As the home to the famous Area 51 – a top-secret United States Air Force Base that serves as a flight-testing facility and is more famous for its association to stories about aliens, their spaceships and other UFOs – one can guess how unbelievable the facts about the State of Nevada are [1]. For instance, from the Great Basin National Park, Nevada, one can see satellites, meteors, other heavenly bodies and the full beauty of the Milky Way without the need for any special equipment, as long as there is no moon or clouds out that night [2]. In that same park, there are ancient groves of the oldest nonclonal organism, the bristle cone pines. The over 5,000-year-old pine tree is thus the oldest living species of all organisms [3].
There is also the tale of what Life Magazine termed ‘The loneliest Road in America’ in 1986, due to uneventful 408-mile long Route 50 (US 50) that cuts straight through the state of Nevada. Fortunately, the government officials could take advantage of such a critical opinion and make it a tourist attraction in a somewhat clever move that made the boring journey look like an appealing experience, and it worked! [4]
Another unbelievable, and kind of eerie fact is that a town in Nevada, St. Thomas town, is located at the base of the Lake Mead, and you can guess the population size of the town [5]. Not even though there is no individual or corporate tax in the State of Nevada, and why should there be? Nevada is the site all three of the top ten producing gold mines in the World that can be found in America, in Cortez, Carlin and the interestingly named Goldstrike [6]. Nevada struck gold in the year 1961 around the Gold Canyon of Nevada by the Newmount Mining Company to kick start Nevada’s Gold Rush. Nowadays. People with interest in amateur mining seek out their own share of gold by moving to Humboldt County of Nevada to contribute to a massively impressive gold rush that has far outlasted California’s gold rush that only lasted seven years [7].
Before then, though, Nevada was known more for the wealth of silver, especially since the biggest deposit of silver in the United States of America was discovered on Mountain Davidson, the Virginia Range located in the west of Nevada [8]. This probably has something to do with why it is called the Silver State, despite the Silver State producing about 165 tons of gold. An amount that places it as the second-most amount of Gold in the world (the biggest gold-producing region is South Africa) and makes it the source of 80% of mined gold in the whole of the United States [7].
Even water is impressive in Nevada, as the Lake Tahoe is one of the deepest lakes in the world. The massive reserves of Lake Tahoe as one of the deepest lakes in the world is proven by the fact that evaporation draws more than 12 billion gallons of water (that’s about 192 billion cups of water or 12, 110 swimming pools!) every 30 days [9]. The water from Lake Tahoe is extremely clear, and tap water from the large lake was also recently praised for its level of purity, claiming the title of the ‘Best Drinking water in the United States’ [10].
For most people, Lake Tahoe is more interesting for its mesmerizing view and many hiking visitors come around for the challenging, yet, inartificial beauty of its rim trails [10]. These visitors also get treated to one of the most popular beautiful sunset views in the world, a treat natives have enjoyed for the past two thousand millenniums. Perhaps that is why the state name of Nevada was birthed from “da ow a ga, ”a city at the “edge of the lake” [10].
