Corporate planners are under more pressure than ever to go green. Not just because it’s the right thing to do but because their executives are asking for it.

ESG compliance is now a standard line item in event planning, and the vendors you choose reflect directly on your company’s sustainability commitments.

Thinking About The Future

Sustainability isn’t a trend anymore. It’s a procurement requirement.

Major corporations are now vetting vendors on their environmental impact before signing contracts. If your activation partner can’t demonstrate low waste, non-toxic materials, and responsible logistics, they’re off the list before the conversation even starts.

The good news: going green at your event doesn’t mean sacrificing the experience. It means choosing vendors who’ve already done the work for you.

Green Vendors For Green Events

One of the most difficult areas is finding an eco-friendly vendor or entertainer that can provide your guests with a truly great experience, while not breaking the bank, or hurting the planet. One of the most eco-friendly green event entertainment options is Airbrush Events.

Just looking to the founders of the company, they take a very minimalist approach in their lifestyle. They know that hoarding material things and wasteful spending are some of the most dangerous mindsets when considering the future of our planet.

They’ve incorporated this minimalist philosophy into the structure of Airbrush Events. Because of this philosophy, you know their business would make a great option for green events.

Party Favors For Green Events Your Guests Will Love

We all have a role to play in keeping this planet green.

Airbrush Events provides party favors and entertainment that is different from the mass-produced plastic giveaways and messy, wasteful entertainment. Airbrush Events combines the fun of personalization with the direct interaction of the artist creating the item.

Every attendee gets to choose directly what they want. There isn’t a waste of time or material on people who don’t really care for a party favor. Most large events have a lot of waste, due simply to people not wanting what is being offered.

Personalization Creates Memories

Letting your attendees decide what they want on their swag helps create a connection between the event and the item. PLUS less waste!

A major win is the personalization by the artists. Not only is it less wasteful but it’s so much more fun to have a personalized item as opposed to a mass-produced one.

Speaking of mass-produced, it can be a real headache trying to finalize the right designs for your swag and then having a company print thousands of your chosen giveaway items. T-shirts being the thing that is most chosen.

The problem is the event organizer has to guess the right amounts of various sizes and make sure that each item is quality. Airbrush Events bring their own shirts and let the event-goers customize them however they want. It’s as simple as that.

Being part of the creative process also builds an emotional connection to the event. When you can take something away from an event, that you helped in part to create, you are much more likely to have good memories of the event itself. Learn how this also works for marketing your brand with brand activation.

A Party Favor That Gets The Crowd Talking

Go beyond basic name tags. Airbrush hats make everyone look cool!

Beyond that aspect, Airbrush Events is also great entertainment for your green event. They provide essentially wasteless fun for all the event participants.

Another major benefit is the clothes and hats created by the airbrush artists, make for a great icebreaker. Guests usually want to throw on their new swag right away. Having a custom tee with their name on it is a great way to encourage networking at the event. It’s essentially an awesome name tag.

It also offers the best type of marketing for the event, FREE marketing. People will be asked where they got their rad new shirt and the recipient will tell him all about this fun event he got it at.

Keeping It Low Waste

There is no waste of products at Airbrush Events. Any products that aren’t 100% perfect, go to a local homeless shelter.

For planners who need to document vendor sustainability for internal reporting, Airbrush Events now provides a formal ESG Commitment Statement and Sustainability Initiative on request. No chasing paperwork. It’s ready before you even ask.

Airbrush Events is one of the few entertainment vendors in the country that can back up its green claims with documentation.
Common Questions: Famous Airbrush Artists

Who is the artist behind the iconic “Long Distance Kiss” poster?

Syd Brak is the pioneer who created the 1982 “Long Distance Kiss” poster, one of the best-selling posters in history. His work defined the neon, hyperrealistic aesthetic of the 1980s and was foundational for modern commercial airbrushing.

Hajime Sorayama is the legendary Japanese artist famous for his “Sexy Robot” series. His ability to render chrome and metallic surfaces with an airbrush is so precise that his work influenced industrial design, including the concept art for Sony’s AIBO robotic dog.

Can airbrushing be considered fine art?

Absolutely. Howard Arkley is a prime example of an artist who brought the airbrush into prestigious fine art galleries. He used the tool to turn depictions of Australian suburban homes into vibrant, psychedelic masterpieces that are now held in major museum collections.

Who is the modern master of hyper-realistic airbrushing?

Dru Blair is the leading name in modern hyper-realism. Specializing in aviation art and lifelike portraits, Blair’s techniques achieve a level of clarity that rivals digital photography, proving the enduring power of the medium in the 21st century.

How do these famous artists influence Airbrush Events and AE Academy?

By studying the technical skill of legends like Letterfly (automotive muralist) and Boris Vallejo (fantasy illustrator), our artists at Airbrush Events and students at AE Academy are able to elevate their own work, ensuring that live brand activations remain at the cutting edge of professional art.

Whether you’re planning a high-profile VIP party, a corporate activation, a casino promotion, or a nightlife extravaganza, airbrush tattoos bring an interactive, exciting, and unforgettable element to the experience. Here’s why they are the perfect addition to any Las Vegas event.

1. Instantly Elevate Any Las Vegas Event

From the buzzing Las Vegas Strip to exclusive VIP lounges, airbrush tattoos add an undeniable wow factor. Their sleek, vibrant designs and realistic finishes make them the perfect statement piece at high-energy events like nightclub parties, casino activations, and corporate gatherings. Attendees love showing off their personalized tattoos, enhancing the immersive Vegas experience.

2. Fast, Flawless Application for High-Volume Events

In Las Vegas, efficiency is everything. Airbrush tattoos are applied in seconds using high-quality, skin-safe paints, making them ideal for large-scale events where speed and engagement matter. Whether it’s a high-traffic casino floor, a buzzing resort pool party, or a massive corporate convention, airbrush tattoos keep the energy flowing and guests entertained without long wait times.

3. A Powerful Branding and Marketing Tool

For casinos, nightlife venues, and corporate brands looking to make a lasting impression, airbrush tattoos double as an effective marketing tool. Custom designs featuring logos, slogans, or event themes transform guests into walking billboards, extending brand visibility beyond the event. Whether it’s a high-stakes poker tournament, a luxury brand activation, or an exclusive nightclub celebration, airbrush tattoos create a fun and memorable way to boost brand engagement.

4. Perfect for High-End Nightlife and VIP Experiences

Las Vegas thrives on exclusivity, and airbrush tattoos can be tailored to match a high-end aesthetic. Offering elegant, sleek designs at luxury events, bottle service areas, and private casino lounges makes for an Instagram-worthy experience. Imagine guests at a rooftop party receiving custom airbrush tattoos under the neon-lit skyline—it’s the kind of unforgettable moment that keeps the buzz going long after the night ends.

5. Long-Lasting, Water-Resistant, and Hassle-Free

Unlike permanent body art, airbrush tattoos offer all the fun with none of the commitment. They are water-resistant, making them perfect for Vegas pool parties, daytime cabanas, and outdoor festivals. Plus, they’re completely safe for all skin types and can easily be removed when guests are ready for a new look—no mess, no stress, just pure entertainment.

6. Built-In Social Media Buzz

In a city where every moment is an opportunity for content creation, airbrush tattoos are highly shareable. Guests love snapping and sharing their unique designs on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. By incorporating branded hashtags and event-specific designs, airbrush tattoos organically increase online exposure, boosting event visibility across digital platforms.

Make Your Las Vegas Event Unforgettable

From Fremont Street to the Strip’s most iconic resorts, airbrush tattoos bring creativity, energy, and interactive entertainment to any setting. Whether you’re planning a high-energy club event, an upscale corporate gathering, or a buzzing casino activation, they guarantee a memorable experience for every guest.

Planning an event in Las Vegas? Elevate the experience with airbrush tattoos—an interactive, fun, and crowd-pleasing addition your guests will love!

When choosing the best portable airbrush compressors for events, the most important factor we consider is CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute). CFM measures airflow, determining how much air the compressor delivers at a given pressure, which directly affects the performance of airbrush tools.

What to Look for in an Airbrush Compressor

CFM & PSI: CFM is always measured at a specific PSI (Pounds per Square Inch). Think of CFM as the amount of water flowing through a hose, while PSI is the pressure pushing that water out. For airbrush events, both must be sufficient to maintain consistent performance.

Portability: The compressor should be compact and lightweight enough to fit inside a case without exceeding airline baggage limits. Staying under 50 pounds (including the case) avoids extra fees when flying.

Noise Level: A quiet compressor is key for events. All the compressors on this list run at 68 decibels or less.

Reliability Over Price: We prioritize performance and durability over cost. Investing in a reliable compressor ensures smooth event operations without unexpected failures.

Best Portable Airbrush Compressors for Events

1. Senco PC1010 – Best Overall

The Senco PC1010 is our favorite compressor due to its balance of performance, portability, and reliability.

Weight: 21 lbsSize: 12” x 12” x 14”CFM: 1.4 at open flowMax PSI: 125Noise Level: 68 decibelsPrice: ~$170 (Available at Walmart, Amazon, and big-box retailers)

This compressor easily fits into a hard-shell case while staying under airline baggage limits. It operates quietly enough that event guests won’t hear it running, especially when placed under a table. The updated handle design provides better motor protection. Unlike many Chinese-made compressors, the Senco PC1010 is consistently available, making it a reliable choice for long-term use.

2. Iwata Power Jet – Most Portable

The Iwata Power Jet is the lightest and most compact compressor on our list, making it ideal for air travel.

Travel-friendly: TSA-compliant since it has no perceivable air tank.Weight: 26 lbsSize: 13” x 7” x 12”Max PSI: 55Noise Level: 68 decibelsPrice: ~$500

This compressor features diaphragm pumps instead of pistons, which prevents overheating. The hollow handle doubles as an air tank, minimizing air surges. Unlike traditional air compressors, the Iwata Power Jet only runs when needed, reducing noise and energy use. However, because of its small size, condensation can build up, requiring the use of air dryers or moisture traps. The low PSI output makes it less ideal for high-demand airbrushing but still effective in a pinch.

3. California Air Tools 1060SP – Best for Home & Local Events

For those needing a higher PSI and CFM, the California Air Tools 1060SP is a great option, especially for stationary or local events.

Weight: 30 lbsSize: 15” x 15” x 17”CFM: 1.0Max PSI: 120Noise Level: 68 decibelsPrice: ~$170

This is the largest and heaviest compressor on the list, making it less ideal for frequent travel. However, its higher power output allows for running two airbrushes simultaneously, making it perfect for busier events.

Bonus: Using CO2 Tanks Instead of Air Compressors

If you want to airbrush without a compressor, consider using a CO2 tank with a regulator.

Completely silent: No running motor, no need for electricity.

Regulators available on Amazon (search for brewing supplies).

20 lb CO2 tanks last ~8 hours of airbrushing.

Cost: Used tanks range from $50–$100; refills cost $50–$65.

The only drawbacks are that regulators can freeze up with continuous use, and they are not allowed on airplanes.

Conclusion

For event airbrushing, Senco PC1010 is our top pick for its balance of portability, power, and quiet operation. The Iwata Power Jet is ideal for ultra-light travel, while the California Air Tools 1060SP is a powerhouse for high-output events. If absolute silence is a priority, CO2 tanks are a viable alternative. Whatever your needs, choosing the right airbrush compressor ensures smooth, efficient performance at your events.

For a more in-depth look at the Senco PC1010, check out The Senco PC1010N Airbrushing Air Compressor With Expert Maintenance Tips.

Frequently Asked Questions: Best Portable Airbrush Compressors

What is the most important factor when choosing an event airbrush compressor?

When selecting a compressor for live events, CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) is the most critical technical spec. It measures the volume of airflow, which determines whether the compressor can keep up with your airbrushing speed without dropping pressure.

What is the best overall portable airbrush compressor for flying to events?

The Senco PC1010 is the gold standard for traveling artists. Weighing only 21 lbs, it easily fits into a standard hard-shell travel case and stays well under the 50 lb airline baggage limit, even with extra tools included.

Is the Iwata Power Jet airbrush compressor TSA-compliant?

Yes. Because the Iwata Power Jet uses a diaphragm pump and utilizes its hollow handle as an air reservoir rather than having a traditional large air tank, it is considered much more travel-friendly and is typically TSA-compliant for air travel.

Can I use a CO2 tank instead of an air compressor for airbrushing?

If you need absolute silence, a CO2 tank with a regulator is a great alternative. A 20 lb tank provides approximately 8 hours of continuous airbrushing. However, keep in mind that CO2 tanks are not permitted on aircraft.

How loud should an airbrush compressor be for a live event?

To keep the atmosphere professional and guest-friendly, we recommend compressors that operate at 68 decibels or less. This allows the compressor to sit under a table without disrupting conversations or the event’s music.

Managing a line or crowd effectively is an essential skill for airbrush artists and event organizers alike. At Airbrush Events, we’ve learned a lot about crowd management from our team members’ experiences. Whether it’s a corporate activation, college event, bar mitzvah, or wedding, here are strategies to ensure smooth operations, minimize guest disappointment, and maintain the excitement throughout the event.

Managing a Line or Crowd Control

In the beginning, artists can work at a comfortable, steady pace. Each guest’s order is taken and completed on the spot, allowing them to watch the creation of their custom swag—a key part of the experience. Typically, this process takes about two minutes per item. Encouraging guests to stay and watch their items being created adds to the excitement and appreciation of the finished product.

Communicating Wait Times

As the event progresses, especially in the last hour, it’s crucial to manage expectations. Here’s how we approach this:

Counting Guests and Announcing Limits:

Estimate how many more items can realistically be painted within the remaining time.

Inform guests waiting in line that only a specific number of party favors (e.g., 20) can be completed. Guests beyond this number are welcome to stay in line but should understand that time may run out before their turn.

Repeat this announcement every 10 to 15 minutes as new guests join the line.

Using Care Instruction Cards:

Distribute a set number of care instruction cards (e.g., 25 cards if there’s time for 25 more items) to guests in line.

Let guests know that they need a card to receive their item. This creates a clear, manageable promise that ensures the artist can meet expectations.

If necessary, stay slightly past the event’s end time to finish items for those with cards.

Distributing Merchandise Directly:

For items that don’t require sizing—like hats, bags, or towels—hand out the merchandise instead of cards. This eliminates confusion and ensures efficiency.

Adapting to Different Event Types

Events vary in how crowds form and behave:

College Events: Guests usually form a natural line, making management straightforward.

Private Events (e.g., Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs):

Guests tend to gather around the airbrush table due to the music and excitement.

In these situations, artists paint as many items as possible until the event concludes. Guests generally disperse once the music stops and lights come on.

Managing Multiple Requests and Custom Orders

Limiting Multiple Items:

Guests requesting multiple items (e.g., two or three shirts) are asked to complete one item first and then rejoin the line for additional items. This ensures fairness for everyone waiting.

Avoiding Custom Designs:

Custom orders that deviate from the displayed designs are generally not accepted during events. These take significantly more time and slow down the line for others.

For additional insights into what attendees value most at events, take a look at Five Things Attendees Really Want from Your Event.

The Role of an Assistant

In some cases, clients request an assistant for the artist. While this adds to the overall cost (labor and additional merchandise), it helps move the line more efficiently. An assistant can organize orders, hand out items, and communicate with the crowd, allowing the artist to focus solely on painting.

Final Thoughts

Managing a line or crowd requires clear communication, fairness, and adaptability to different event types. These strategies not only ensure smooth operations but also enhance the overall guest experience. By keeping lines organized and guests informed, you can turn even the busiest events into a memorable success for everyone involved—from the client to the guests to the artists themselves.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over years of airbrushing at countless events, it’s that keeping your airbrush clean and well-maintained is key to great results. I’ve developed a simple routine that keeps my equipment running smoothly, and I’m here to share my best tips and go-to tools with you. Whether you’re new to airbrushing or a seasoned pro, these tips will help make airbrush maintenance easier.

Why Regular Airbrush Maintenance Matters

After working hundreds of events, I can tell you firsthand that regular maintenance is essential. If you skip it, you’ll end up dealing with clogs, inconsistent paint flow, and worn-out parts way sooner than you should. Trust me, a little time spent cleaning goes a long way toward avoiding headaches later.

Essential Airbrush Cleaning Supplies

Here are the must-have supplies I always keep on hand:

Pipe Cleaners: I use these for cleaning out the inside of siphon tubes in bottle adapters. They’re perfect for those narrow openings. Recommended product: ZEN Bundles Zen Pipe Cleaners Hard Bristle, 132 Count

Terry Cloth Towels: These are my go-to for wiping down paint bottles, adapters, and the airbrush station. Recommended product: Simpli-Magic 79171 Terry Towel Cleaning Cloths, Pack of 50

Windex: A quick and effective cleaning solution for rinsing out airbrushes during events. I like it because it doesn’t produce any harsh fumes. Recommended product: Windex Cleaner Trigger Bottle

Carburetor Cleaner: This might sound unconventional, but I’ve been using carb cleaner for almost 10 years, and it’s never damaged any seals or Teflon O-rings. Just be sure to use it in a well-ventilated area. Recommended product: Gumout Carb/Choke and Parts Cleaner

Airbrush Cleaning Kit: For those stubborn bits of dried paint, an airbrush cleaning kit with brushes and needles can save the day. Recommended product: Master Airbrush Brand – Airbrush Cleaning Kit

Needle Restoring Tool: Occasionally, I’ll get a slight bend or burr on my needle. A very fine-grit sandpaper can help, but for a better fix, I use a needle restoring tool. Recommended product: SharpenAir Bent Airbrush Needle Restoring Tool

Step-by-Step Airbrush Cleaning Process

1. Cleaning Paint Bottles

Whenever I refill my paint bottles, I rinse them out with soap and water. I also use a toothbrush to scrub away any dried paint inside. It’s important to remove all the residue to prevent clogs. If the siphon tube has paint buildup, I’ll use a pipe cleaner to get it spotless.

2. Maintaining Bottle Adapters

The bottle adapters—or siphon tops—include a cap and a siphon tube that draws paint into the airbrush. These need occasional deep cleaning. I disassemble the adapter, clean the threads with a toothbrush, and run a pipe cleaner through the siphon. If there’s dried paint in the small openings, I use an old airbrush needle to carefully ream it out.

3. Quick Airbrush Cleaning During Events

When I’m at an event, and an airbrush starts acting up, I mix 50% water with 50% Windex to flush it out. It’s a quick fix that usually does the trick without any harsh smells.

4. Deep Cleaning with Carburetor Cleaner

After about 10 to 15 events, I do a deep clean using a carburetor cleaner. Here’s how I do it:

I remove the needle and spray carb cleaner through the back of the airbrush.

I work my way forward, spraying into the trigger assembly while running air pressure to push out the cleaner.

Lastly, I spray into the opening where the bottle adapter plugs in.

This method might seem unconventional, but it’s incredibly effective. Just remember, carb cleaner produces toxic fumes, so only use it in a well-ventilated space.

Handling Stubborn Dried Paint

If you’ve got stubborn dried paint that won’t budge, don’t worry. You can use an old airbrush needle to gently pick it out, or try a Q-tip or pipe cleaner for larger openings. A dedicated airbrush cleaning kit is also handy for this.

Inspecting and Replacing Airbrush Nozzles and Needles

Nozzles are made of soft brass and can wear out over time. If you notice your needle sticking out farther than usual or if the paint flow is inconsistent, it’s probably time to replace the nozzle. Sometimes, you can keep using the same needle, but if it’s bent or damaged, replace it too.

If my needle has a small bend, I’ll try to straighten it with fine-grit sandpaper or my needle restoring tool. It’s not perfect, but it can extend the needle’s life.

Keeping the Airbrush Station Clean

Overspray can build up quickly on the station. Since my airbrush station has anodized aluminum parts with Teflon coating, I just use Windex and a clean terry cloth towel to wipe everything down. The easel, made of stain-resistant plastic, cleans up easily with the same method.

Maintaining the Air Compressor

Don’t forget about your air compressor! After each use, drain the air tank to prevent rust from forming inside. That’s pretty much all you need to do for compressor maintenance.

Pro Tip for Indoor Cleaning

When I’m cleaning airbrushes indoors—usually in my kitchen—I’m extra careful to avoid splashing. Using a bucket inside the sink helps control the mess, and I always keep a roll of paper towels nearby.

Final Thoughts

Frequently Asked Questions: Airbrush Maintenance

How often should I deep clean my airbrush?

At Airbrush Events, we recommend a full deep clean every 10 to 15 events. While regular flushing after every use is vital, a periodic teardown ensures that no hidden residue builds up in the trigger assembly or internal seals.

Is carburetor cleaner safe for cleaning an airbrush?

Carburetor cleaner is incredibly effective at dissolving “permanent” dried paint clogs. However, because it produces toxic fumes, it should only be used as a last resort for deep cleaning in a highly ventilated workspace. This is a pro-level maintenance technique we teach at AE Academy.

What is a quick way to flush an airbrush during a live event?

When time is of the essence, a 50/50 mix of water and Windex is a lifesaver. It cuts through paint fast and helps clear minor clogs instantly without the overwhelming smell of standard airbrush thinners—perfect for busy event environments.

How do I know when to replace my airbrush nozzle?

Nozzles are made of soft brass and will eventually “flare” or wear out. If your needle seems to seat too far forward or your paint flow feels unpredictable despite a clean needle, it is time to swap in a fresh nozzle.

What tool is best for fixing a bent airbrush needle?

If you drop your airbrush and bend the tip, don’t throw the needle away yet! A needle-restoring tool, such as the SharpenAir, can often hone and straighten the metal back to a factory-smooth finish, saving you money on replacement parts.

At Airbrush Events, we’ve experienced exciting growth recently, which means expanding our team and refining our virtual onboarding process to integrate new admin staff smoothly. As a fully remote company, virtual onboarding has become our go-to method for integrating new team members into our workflow. One success story is Valerie, our newest admin team member, who joined us after working for eight years with a trusted hat supplier. But virtual onboarding doesn’t come without challenges, and in this article, I’ll walk you through the process we use at Airbrush Events to efficiently onboard admin staff, while sharing insights from Valerie’s experience.

The Importance of Virtual Onboarding in a Growing Business

As a company that operates entirely remotely, virtual onboarding is essential to our ability to scale. From Georgia to Texas, our team is spread across multiple states. The key to smooth onboarding lies in clear communication, effective use of technology, and fostering a strong company culture.

When hiring remotely, it’s crucial to make the onboarding process as seamless as possible. Using tools like Google Meet and Insightly CRM, we provide new hires like Valerie with the guidance and training needed to succeed in their roles, regardless of location.

Why We Hired Valerie: A Perfect Fit for Our Company Culture

Valerie joined our team under unique circumstances. She had been our contact at a hat distributor for years and was always a pleasure to work with. When we learned that her company was downsizing, I reached out to her with an offer. She had multiple offers but chose us because she felt a strong alignment with our values and work culture. This was a huge win for us as Valerie’s work ethic and friendly demeanor were already well known.

Our story with Valerie highlights the importance of finding team members who not only have the right skill set but also fit the culture of the company. Even in a virtual setting, company culture plays a significant role in keeping remote teams connected and productive.

Tools and Processes for Virtual Onboarding

Using Google Meet for Remote Training

Since our team is scattered across different states, we rely heavily on Google Meet for video calls and screen sharing during onboarding. This tool allows us to walk new hires through their tasks in real-time, guiding them with visual instructions. Video chats have become a fundamental part of our communication, especially since COVID-19 normalized remote work.

Valerie’s onboarding began with multiple video calls where we shared screens and went through her responsibilities step-by-step. This method allows for clear and interactive training sessions that are far more effective than emails or chat messages alone.

Insightly CRM: Organizing Tasks and Workflows

Another crucial tool for onboarding is Insightly CRM. Our CRM serves as the repository for all our client information, event details, and task lists. It helps us assign tasks to new hires like Valerie in an organized manner, ensuring that they are only given responsibilities they are comfortable handling at first.

By starting with simpler tasks, Valerie could gradually learn her role at her own pace. As she became more familiar with the system, we assigned more complex responsibilities. This incremental approach ensures that new hires are not overwhelmed while getting up to speed.

Challenges of Virtual Onboarding: Time and Communication

While virtual onboarding offers flexibility, it also comes with unique challenges, particularly in time management and communication.

All Hands on Deck for Training

One major hurdle we faced was finding the time to train Valerie. As a growing company, we’re often juggling multiple projects at once, and training requires the involvement of several team members. Valerie’s training involved everyone from the operations team to senior management, each sharing their expertise in different aspects of the business.

With everyone working remotely and on different schedules, coordinating training sessions required extra planning. But we made it work by scheduling regular video calls and making ourselves available for chat or video support when Valerie needed help.

Keeping Communication Lines Open

Another challenge is ensuring clear and consistent communication. Remote work can sometimes lead to miscommunication or delays in response times. To address this, we made sure Valerie had multiple channels to reach out to us—whether through a video call, instant message, or email. This open-door policy helped her feel supported throughout the onboarding process.

Valerie’s Role Moving Forward

Valerie has now settled into her role, and her responsibilities continue to expand. Starting with basic admin tasks, she is gradually taking on more complex duties such as scheduling artists, creating contracts, and making travel arrangements for events. Soon, she will be responsible for managing entire event contracts, guiding clients from start to finish.

By the time Valerie completes her training, she will be fully equipped to plan and execute events, ensuring that Airbrush Events continues to provide top-tier service to clients across the country.

Conclusion: A Success Story in Virtual Onboarding

At Airbrush Events, virtual onboarding has been key to our expansion, allowing us to recruit talented admin staff from anywhere. With tools like Google Meet and Insightly CRM, we can effectively train new hires like Valerie, helping them integrate smoothly into our remote team. Valerie’s onboarding experience showcases how a well-organized virtual process, combined with strong communication, can lead to success, even in a fully remote environment.

As our company grows, we’re excited to continue refining our virtual onboarding process to welcome more talented team members like Valerie.

At Airbrush Events, our mission goes beyond creating unforgettable experiences through art; it’s about balancing heart and skill to build a stellar team that connects people, sparks joy, and leaves a lasting impression. As we continue to grow, one of the most pivotal challenges we face is building a team that embodies both passion and proficiency. Whether it’s hiring talented artists, diligent administrative staff, or innovative marketing professionals, we often encounter candidates who either brim with enthusiasm but lack certain skills, or possess exceptional abilities but show little zeal for the job.

This conundrum isn’t unique to us—small business owners across industries grapple with the same dilemma. So, how do we strike the right balance between heart and skill to assemble a team that not only excels in their roles but also aligns with our company’s ethos?

The Airbrush Events team brings passion and skill together to create unforgettable experiences.

The Heart of the Matter: Passion Over Proficiency?

Enthusiastic employees are the heartbeat of any organization. Their energy is infectious, inspiring colleagues and creating a positive work environment. At Airbrush Events, we’ve seen how passionate artists can transform a simple event into a magical experience. Their genuine excitement engages guests, turning spectators into participants and creating memories that last long after the paint has dried.

However, enthusiasm alone isn’t enough. An artist might have the passion but lack the technique required to deliver the high-quality work our clients expect. Similarly, an administrative assistant may be eager to contribute but might struggle with organizational skills, affecting efficiency and productivity.

Pros of Hiring for Heart:

Cultural Fit: Passionate employees often align closely with the company’s values and mission.

Growth Potential: Enthusiasm can be a strong foundation for learning and development.

Positive Energy: Their zeal can boost team morale and foster a collaborative atmosphere.

Cons of Hiring for Heart:

Training Investment: They may require significant time and resources to reach the desired skill level.

Initial Underperformance: The learning curve can temporarily impact productivity and service quality.

Uncertainty: There’s no guarantee that training will bridge all skill gaps.

The Skill Spectrum: Proficiency Without Passion?

On the flip side, highly skilled employees can hit the ground running, delivering immediate results. In our marketing department, a strategist with a proven track record can elevate our brand presence swiftly. Their expertise ensures that campaigns are executed flawlessly, maximizing ROI and driving growth.

Yet, a lack of enthusiasm can be a silent detriment. An artist who delivers impeccable work but lacks engagement may not connect with clients or colleagues, missing opportunities to elevate the experience. An unenthusiastic marketer might not innovate or push boundaries, resulting in stagnation.

Pros of Hiring for Skill:

Immediate Impact: Skilled employees contribute effectively from day one.

High Quality of Work: Their expertise ensures consistency and excellence.

Efficiency: Less time is spent on training and supervision.

Cons of Hiring for Skill:

Low Engagement: Lack of passion can lead to disengagement and a transactional approach to work.

Cultural Disconnect: They may not fully embrace or contribute to the company culture.

Risk of Turnover: Disengaged employees are more likely to leave, leading to higher turnover costs.

Balancing Heart and Skill: Our Strategy

At Airbrush Events, we’ve learned that the ideal team member embodies a harmony of heart and skill. While finding such individuals can be challenging, we’ve developed strategies to nurture both aspects within our team.

1. Comprehensive Onboarding

We invest in a robust onboarding process that immerses new hires in our company culture. By sharing our mission, values, and the impact of our work, we aim to ignite their passion from the start.

2. Continuous Training and Development

For those who show enthusiasm but need to hone their skills, we offer training programs, workshops, and mentorship opportunities. This not only improves their proficiency but also demonstrates our commitment to their growth.

3. Engagement Initiatives

To keep skilled employees engaged, we involve them in decision-making processes, encourage creativity, and provide challenges that align with their interests. Recognizing and rewarding their contributions reinforces their connection to the company.

4. Feedback Culture

Regular feedback sessions allow us to address any issues promptly. By maintaining open communication, we can understand their aspirations, concerns, and how we can support them better.

5. Team-Building Activities

We organize events that bring our team together outside of work tasks. This fosters relationships, builds trust, and strengthens the collective spirit.

Lessons for Fellow Small Business Owners

Building a team that’s both passionate and proficient is no small feat, but it’s crucial for long-term success. Here are some takeaways from our journey:

Define Your Company Culture: Clearly articulate your mission and values. This attracts like-minded individuals who are more likely to be both engaged and skilled.

Invest in People: Whether it’s training for the enthusiastic novice or engagement for the seasoned expert, investing in your team pays dividends.

Flexibility is Key: Be open to adjusting roles or responsibilities to better fit an employee’s strengths and passions.

Prioritize Communication: Regular check-ins can uncover issues before they escalate and keep everyone aligned.

Lead by Example: Demonstrate the balance of heart and skill in your leadership approach.

For more insights on hiring for attitude versus skill, consider this article by The Wall Street Journal.

Conclusion

At Airbrush Events, we’ve found that the synergy of heart and skill elevates not only our services but also our workplace. While the journey to build such a team is ongoing and requires effort, the results are evident in the smiles of our clients and the camaraderie of our staff.

For other small businesses facing the same dilemma, remember that employees are more than just their resumes or their enthusiasm. They’re individuals with unique potentials waiting to be unlocked. By fostering an environment that cultivates both passion and proficiency, you’re not just building a team—you’re building a community poised for success.

The airbrush artist journey is rarely straightforward, and mine is a testament to that. In the early days, the vast array of ways to earn a living with airbrush seemed overwhelming. I dabbled in various techniques and styles, but something was missing. Then, I made a pivotal decision: to specialize in one specific type of airbrush. This wasn’t about limiting myself, but rather about honing my skills and becoming a true master of my craft. The more I focused, the more my work improved, and the more my passion grew.

Key Milestones in the Airbrush Artist Journey

How Specialization Shapes the Airbrush Artist Journey

Specialization brought clarity of purpose. I could dedicate my time and energy to truly understanding the nuances of my chosen airbrush, experimenting with techniques, and pushing the boundaries of what was possible. It also set me apart in a crowded field. Clients knew what to expect from me, and I could deliver results that exceeded their expectations.

Building a Team

I soon realized that even the most talented individual can only achieve so much alone. Building a team became essential. It wasn’t just about having extra hands; it was about bringing together diverse perspectives, skills, and experiences. My team became my collaborators, my sounding boards, and my support system.

A Shared Vision

As my team and I worked together, something remarkable happened. Our individual goals and aspirations merged into a shared vision, a mission that transcended our personal ambitions. We wanted to revolutionize the event industry, to elevate it to new heights of artistry and innovation. This clarity of purpose energized us, and we set out to achieve the impossible.

The Future

The future is full of exciting possibilities. New techniques, groundbreaking projects, uncharted territories? Whatever lies ahead, I’m confident that my team and I will face it with the same passion, dedication, and unwavering belief in our mission. We will continue to push the boundaries, inspire others, and leave our mark on the world of airbrush art. The journey has just begun.

Airbrush Events is dedicated to transforming passionate individuals into skilled airbrush artists through virtual airbrush training, even if they have no prior art experience. As President of Airbrush Events, I’ve had the privilege of training several artists from the ground up. Recently, I successfully trained Martin Ingram, our Equipment & Inventory Manager, entirely remotely. Here’s how we did it.

Embracing Technology for Virtual Airbrush Training

The advent of technology has revolutionized our training process. By using an app that supports video chat and recording, we bypass the need for synchronized schedules. This allows personalized instruction without requiring the teacher and student to be available simultaneously. This flexibility was a game-changer for us.

The Remote Training Process

To train Martin, I used a simple yet effective setup. I mounted my phone on a tripod to film myself airbrushing and explaining each step. Martin watched these videos at his convenience, practiced the techniques, and sent his attempts back for my critique. This iterative process, repeated dozens of times, ensured continuous improvement.

The Importance of Practice Can’t Be Overstated

Teaching airbrushing involves brief instructional videos followed by extensive practice. Success heavily depends on the student’s dedication. Like the “wax on, wax off” technique in Karate Kid, mastering airbrushing requires repetitive practice to build muscle memory and dexterity.

Essential Equipment for Beginners

Starting with the right equipment is crucial. I recommend:

One quality airbrush: Investing in a good airbrush is essential for your progress. I recommend the Iwata HP-BCS, which is a versatile and reliable airbrush. Our team uses them exclusively because they perform exceptionally well and do not hinder your skills. Cheaper airbrushes can hold you back, making you think your abilities are lacking when, in fact, the tool is inadequate.

Airbrush hose and compressor: A basic, affordable compressor works fine. Look for one that’s not too loud. Silent compressors are typically unnecessary for beginners and can be costly. We love this one by Senco. Whatever you get, it should be able to provide at least 60 psi of air pressure continuously.

Easel and good lighting: Ensure a well-lit and ventilated workspace.

Practice materials: Use paper towels or rolls of Kraft paper and one bottle of black paint for initial practice. Black paint flows the best, making it ideal for beginners.

Documenting Progress

Martin documented his practice hours, totaling about 80 before he was event-ready. Painting smaller items, like hats, required additional practice due to their complexity. Hats, with their small size and curved surface, present unique challenges that demand extra attention and time.

Structured Learning Path

Our lessons begin with fundamental drills: lines, shading, and dagger strokes. We quickly move to script lettering, the most challenging yet essential skill. Mastering these basics makes learning to compose pictures and use color easier.

Real-World Application and Ongoing Practice

Martin continues to refine his skills, mostly through hands-on experience at events. Our latest trainee, Natalie (aka Sugar), has shown remarkable progress in just two months. She had some experience with airbrushing tattoos using stencils but needed to develop freehand lettering skills. She is now almost ready for events, with some already scheduled for her in October.

Join Us

Remote training has opened doors for many aspiring artists, making learning accessible and cost-effective. If you have the drive and determination to learn to airbrush and join Airbrush Events, reach out to us. We’re excited to help you turn your passion into a profession.

For those looking to transform their creative ambitions into a practical skill, our virtual training program provides the perfect opportunity. We look forward to welcoming new artists into our team and helping them achieve their potential.

The short video below shows a mashup of some of the videos that Martin and I exchanged during his training.
